Military may Recruit Foreigners
Boston Globe, December 27, 2006
An amazing headline don’t you think? The United States Military is designed to protect the ideals of the constitution and our way of life here in the Unites States. Our elected officials have gotten it into their heads the idea to recruit foreigners is a good idea for America.
The people that are in charge of the country at this time are so intent on “spreading America’s military and economic power through out the world” they are willing to destroy what America is in order to do so. The military is proud to recruit citizen-soldiers as they have since the beginning of our nation but the people that are putting forth this idea are not concerned with the continuing tradition of the citizen-soldier.
The reason they are not concerned with that tradition is because the citizens of this country are more informed and have more at stake in the process. They have also seen what is really going on and they want no part of it. That is where the foreigners step in because they either do not care about the ideals of America or they do not have the knowledge needed to make a critical decision.
I am entirely against letting some in our government start this practice because they are intent only with furthering their own agenda and care nothing about the ideals of America. If we the people of the United States do not stand up with a unified voice and demand that our government operates only within the ideals of our nation and the laws of our nation then we will lose our national identity and we will deserve whatever we get.
For far too long we have set back and let those in political office tell us that we are too simple to understand the complex issues of running a nation and we should just leave it to “our betters”, I say that it is time for us to tell them we are the ones in charge and we are going to hold you accountable to the laws of the land.
The recent election shows that, we the people, still have a voice but we cannot be content with just electing a new group of people who have the propensity to start ignoring us as well. It will require an active participation in the daily operations of our government to ensure our elected officials are actually doing what they said they would.
So if we want to let a few people with their own agenda guide our country down a path of losing sight of the ideals that made our country then we should just set back and do nothing. IF you are tired of being brushed aside and ignored by those we hire to conduct our nation’s business then do something to let them know you are not satisfied with what they are doing.
The recent elections were a good start America but it cannot end there. I will quote Thomas Jefferson, “Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom” and another is,
"It behooves our citizens to be on their guard, to be firm in their principles, and full of confidence in themselves. We are able to preserve our self-government if we will but think so." --Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Mann Randolph, Jr., 1800. ME 10:151
"Lethargy is the forerunner of death to the public liberty." --Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith, 1787.
We must not allow ourselves to become lax in our duties as citizens of this nation; it is the only way we can keep our nation.
